The State Minister of Information and Telecommunication, Hon. Paul Dhel Gum said that the incident occurred when civilians from Western Bahr El Ghazal state surprisingly closed the bridge connecting the two states at Tharkueng area.

Gum said the protest was intended to respond to the Kuac South Payam community of Warrap State for removing the flag of Western Bahr El Ghazal which was mounted at Dong, an area the community claimed to be deeply inside Warrap state territory.

“We regret the loss of life in which a medical assistant was shot as a result of a random shooting by those who closed the bridge. May God rest his soul in peace? Police and security agents from the two states will start immediate investigate into the circumstances in which the medical assistant was killed,” The Minaister said.

“Our people have peacefully co-existed with neighboring communities for the sake of peace and unity. Those encroaching Warrap state territories must seize from now on to avoid provoking our peaceful communities. We urge our people to continue to champion peacefulness with all South Sudanese without distinction,” Gum continued.

Following the incident which started on Wednesday, Warrap government has sent the Deputy Governor, Hon. Akec Tong Aleu accompanied with the state security committee to meet with Western Bahr el Ghazal counterparts to address the issue.

Gum urged the public to keep calm as the two states are working closely to reconcile the neighbouring communities.

“Public should not panic as we continue to exert efforts to maintain peace between our two states. We assure you to arrest those responsible of creating havoc because denying public passage is national securityconcern for everyone,” he said.

He said a high committee co-chaired by two commissioners of Gogrial West and Jur River counties has been established and that the bridge has been opened to allow free passage for the people crossing into either of the two states.

“Joint forces have been deployed to disarm the civilians and maintain law and order. No more construction or establishment of government units by Western Bahr El Ghazal state in contested areas till amicable solutions are reached. The two states to work hand in hand to defuse tension between two bordering communities.”

The fight between WBG and Warrap States started over the ownership of Nyinakok area, the now County Headquarters for Jur River. The headquarters of Jur River County has been inside Wau town until July 2014 when it was relocated to WBG – Warrap states border town causing contests over the land among the local communities and governments.

Nyinakok was claimed by Warrap state. WBGS government has relocated the Jur River County’s Headquarters to Nyinakok and constructed the administrative premises in the area.

Chiefs from Warrap, led by Chief Ngor Ater from Gogrial East County, launched a complaint claiming the location of Nyinakok area as part of Warrap.
