13 POLICE Officers SENTENCED FOR AIDING TORIT JAIL BREAK in South Sudan

Juba 1st Feb. 2015. The South Sudan National Police Services leadership in Eastern Equatoria State punished 13 police personnel including five commissioned officers with sentenced to serve prison terms for helping 19 suspected murderers escape a Torit jail dated 14 Jan. 2015. The 19 suspects conducted deathly violent attacks that resulted to death of 24 persons including women and children. The judgment passed for the 13 police personnel would serve six months in prison and pay 3,000 South Sudanese Pounds in addition to being dismissed from the service.

Mr. Edmund Yakani, Executive Director said CEPO welcome and appreciate the decision and the move of the police leadership in Eastern Equatoria State. This is a remarkable action for ensuring that justice and accountability prevail. It is a good start but CEPO urged the observation of due legal process fully without any favor or compromises.

The holding members of the law enforcement accountable publically is an aspect of making the civilians build trust and confidence on the institutions of the law enforcement agencies as institutions for their safety and protection. The Torit police move is a effective indicators of strengthening accountability among the police services and this will make the citizens have trust and confidence that the police leadership is straight ward in standing against culture of impunity. Finally, CEPO is urging the South Sudan National Police Services to ensure that the practice of Torit is sustain and applied across the country. CEPO will be fully engaged in monitoring the case of Torit
