Juba 22. Feb. 2015. 89 children were abducted by armed group in Wau Shilluk communities of Upper Nile State. UNICEF confirmed the abduction and said the number of the abducted children could be higher. The abducted were found doing their examinations. The communities’ members who were eye witness said that the age of the abducted children is from 12 years old above.

In strong terms Community Empowerment for Progress Organization condemned the act of abducting school children in Wau Shullik.  This is unacceptable and should not be tolerated. Enough with the Uganda rebels Lord Resistance Army have done to children in the region.  Targeting children for strengthening military resource is a violation of child rights and it is a crime. CEPO is recommending IGAD and AU to intervene immediately without delay.

Mr. Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of CEPO said we are at generation where we should deny our children education because of our political difference. The use of children in armed conflict is violation of international law and children rights stipulated in regional and international mechanisms on child rights

The militants behind the abduction of above 89 children should free them immediately and give the children chance to continue their studies. Their future is very important and should not be prevented because of political difference among the national political elites.

CEPO declare a campaign “Free our school children for their studies”. The CEPO will petition IGAD and AU liaison offices in Juba to immediately intervene for the release of the abducted school children in Wau Shullik
