Juba 14th March, 2015. Sudanese president Omer Hassan al-Bashir asserted that the contested Abyei area belongs to Sudan and will remain a Sudanese territory during his speech in Al Foula of West Kordofan state dated 11th March, 2015.

Community Empowerment for Progress Organization condemned the statement issued by president Al-Bashir on the ground his statement is fuelling violence in Abyei and undermining the community efforts made for maintaining peace in Abyei.

CEPO feel that president Al-Bashir is attempting to fuel more violence in Abyei besides the recent human rights atrocities committed against the sons and daughters of Abyei by his government agents

Mr. Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of CEPO said president Al-Bashir strategy of using Abyei as a card of winning votes from the Misseriya pastoralists is an acceptable and it is a strategy of creating fighting between the Nogk Dinka and the Misseriya.

The African Union and IGAD should keep close eye on this recent development. They should work to prevent it from escalating into violent conflict. President Al-Basihr idea of planning to visit Abyei is dangerous and it is a possible factor for triggering violent conflict.

Since Abyei statue is still contested and not resolved, IGAD and Africa Union should take the suggestion of Al-Bashir visiting as serious issue that can trigger violence.IGAD and AU should intervene immediately without any delay that can give president Al-Bashir chance of visiting Abyei. Mr. Yakani stressed

In strong terms CEPO is urging President Al-Bashir to ensure that he did engage on making peaceful co-existence prevail between the Misseriya and Nogk Dinka. Triggering violence for the sake of accessing state political power or control of state political power is absolute attitudes and tactics of dictatorship
