WAU, March 27, 2015 [Gurtong] – Western Bahr el Ghazal state Legislative Assembly on Thursday elected Hon. Mary Emilio Bafuka as the Deputy Speaker.

Bafuka was unanimously elected by all MPs after she was announced a candidate for the position.

She was elected in an assembly sitting during the reopening of the assembly on Wednesday.

Bafuka who has been the head of the Specialized Committee in the assembly since 2005 also worked as the State Women’s Association Chairlady.

“The election of Bafuka as the first female deputy speaker in Western Bahr el Ghazal state means a great significance in promoting gender balance in the state,” said the speaker Mario Nyibang John.

The Speaker also said it was not by chance for Bafuka but, her appointment is backed by her ability and commitment since she joined parliament.

“We all believe Bafuka has the capacity to fulfill her duties and as deputy speaker in this assembly,” John said.
