Chairperson of National Election Commission, Prof Abdednego Akok officially declared the proposed South Sudan General Nation Elections 30th June, 2015 postponement. He said the postponement is in line with the amended interim national constitution 2015-2018. Community Empowerment for Progress Organization welcomes the announcement of the elections postponement. This is right decisions and this was the demands of the majority stakeholders because of the current context of the country which absolutely does not favor conduct of national elections

Mr. Edmund Yakani, executive Director of CEPO said the decision of NEC although it is late but it is right. The current situation of the country never gives chance for conduct of fair, peaceful and credible national elections per the National Elections Act, 2012 articles 5 and 6. Whatever reason the leadership of NEC gave for the postponement of the proposed national election 30th June, 2015 is acceptable.

Secondly it is right for NEC to declare the postponement on 30th March, 2015 because per the National Elections Act, 2012 by 31th march, 2015 the president is suppose to dissolve the government if the national elections will be conduct on 30th June, 2015. Thanks for NEC leadership for responding positively to our advocacy and call for the national elections postponement.

In strong terms, CEPO is call upon NEC leadership to lobby the South Sudan warring parties to obtain peace for conduct of fair, peaceful and credible elections as a mode of honorable transfer of the political power from one person to another or from one political party to another or group of political parties’ coalition. In terms of the announcement of the future date for the conduct of national election, it is essential to observe the legal provision of The National Elections Act, 2012 article 15 (1) “whenever an election is to be held, the Commission shall announce and Publish in the Gazette and the print media a notice of the holding of the election at least six months before the date of the election”. If peace is achieved
