This year’s Christmas celebrations turned into a loss for the proprietor of a famous hotel and entertainment spot in Yambio when anxious revellers turned their anger on his premises.

The town residents had reportedly bought tickets going for 20 Sudanese Pounds to watch popular Nigerian actor Nkem Owoh, popularly known as Osuofia or Ukwa perfom at South Sudan Hotel in Yambio.

However, the announcement that had run in a local radio station for two days turned out to be a hoax.

Investigations conducted by Gurtong later revealed that the confusion had been caused by the presence of some Nigerian movie stars who are training some South Sudanese actors in Juba and rumours had spread that the whole team would stage a show in the Western Equatoria State capital Yambio.

During the December 26 fracas at the hotel, the angry revellers destroyed property of unknown value including furniture, utensils and windows.

However, some of the town’s residents had expressed sceptism with the presence of the popular Nollywood actor, with some wondering if Osuofia would really leave his country, Nigeria, for a remote Yambio in South Sudan.

“I am not really sure if it really is Osuofia … because he cannot leave Nigeria and other beautiful places without security threats just to come to Yambio that is infested with the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) atrocities”, said a Yambio town resident only identified as Daru.

Investigations have been launched to determine those responsible for the loss caused.
