The Akobo Anyuak Coordination Council in Diaspora (AACCD) has urged the South Sudanese government to sign the IGAD-led peace deal after consultations.

BOR, 24 August 2015 [Gurtong] – While rejecting the deal, the council expressed its longing for a lasting peace in South Sudan and said it will only accept a peace process where root causes of the conflict are addressed.

They said peace could be achieved if all the aggrieved communities across South Sudan are consulted and represented in the IGAD peace negotiation process.

“IGAD is only replicating and encouraging a cycle of a non-stop violence that could erupt at any time”, they said in a statement.

The council has at the same time called upon the international humanitarian and faith based organisations to consider humanitarian approach that could bring about a national reconciliation and sustainable peace.

“We support the decision taken by HE General Salva Kiir Mayadit to not sign the
agreement till further consultations are made”, they said.

They added that the SPLM-IO does not represent all communities in Greater Upper Nile as they claimed to be, but the interest of a single ethnic, community which can be proven and obvious in its agendas, slogans and structures.

AACCD said IGAD does not have right to offer a single ethnic group and disregard or neglect others.

“The power sharing provision should be excluded from the IGAD peace talks until an inclusive consultation with South Sudanese and thorough research is conducted on its humanitarian and political implication”, said the council.

They said the SPLM-IO should have heeded to the Arusha agreement for the reunification of SPLM where the initial disagreements triggered the killings and burning of houses and displacement of thousands of innocent Anyuak people in Akobo in December 2013.

“We do not guarantee that the rights of Akobo Anyuak will be observed by the parties should this agreement is signed”, they said.

The AACCD is a non-partisan community organisation that coordinates all Akobo Anyuak related matters in Diaspora.
