The former Governor of Lakes State, Chol Tong Mayay on Monday defected the SPLM-G10 'Former Detainees' faction and joined the SPLM party under the leadership of Salva Kiir Mayardit.

RUMBEK, 18January 2016 [Gurtong] – Chol Tong Mayay said that his defection is in the interest of the Arusha Re-unification Agreement.

Engineer Chol Tong Mayay, was detained in 2013 by the South Sudan national security and later released and taken to Kenya with most of his colleagues well-known as the SPLM former detainees.

“In the spirit of the Arusha Re-unification Agreement and after consultations with my constituency following the incorporation of the ARA into the SPLM constitution by recently concluded SPLM1st extraordinary convention, I hereby declare the end of my membership in the SPLM FDs/G10 and joining the re-unified SPLM under the leadership of H.E. Salva Kiir Mayardit, chairman of the SPLM and president of the Republic of South Sudan with effect from, today 18th January, 2016.”

Youth in the State have congratulated the former Governor for the bold decision taken and said that they support him.

Makur Chol Majok a Student of Rumbek University and Chairperson of Young Plan Youth Association in Rumbek Central County spoke to Gurtong on the issue.

"As residents of Rumbek Central County particularly Rup Community we are glad and extremely happy to welcome the bold decision of our Son and leader, Engineer Chol Tong Mayay to the SPLM Party as part of the reunification of SPLM."

Mamer Mayen Mading also fromLakes State described the Speech delivered by the former Governor of Lakes State during his declaration to join the SPLM party as an excellent speech.

He called on the former Governor to support the leadership of the SPLM party in order to achieve the goals set for the country.
