Officials in Raga say that approximately 50 people have lost their lives in the recent attack that occurred on Wednesday in the town by unidentified armed.

WAU 17 June, 2016 [Gurtong] – In addition to that an official from the Ivory Bank said that the attackers looted an estimated amount of 30 million South Sudanese pounds and went away with unknown number of computers.
 
Ivory Bank’s Branch Manager in Raga, Osman Idris, said, “They broke into the bank as well as the staff residence which is just next to the bank.”

Among the strategic areas targeted by the attackers was the Raga Prison where many inmates were killed and others freed. The State barracks was also among the areas attacked.

Raymond John one of the Governor’s body guards who managed to escape but sustained gunshot wounds on the back is now recovering at Aweil Hospital.

He explained that after exchanging fire with the attackers, they realised that they were being overpowered by the group as they were heavily armed leaving most of the people running into the bush for safety.

Another resident, Maper Dau sustained injuries on his leg.  He said the attackers were dressed in army uniform.

The SPLA spokesman, Brigadier General Lul Ruai Koang said the main objective of the SPLA is to restore law and order in the area.

“You know war is a risky business, it is part of the military profession and therefore we don’t want to be diverted from the main responsibility by coming out with causalities or not. The most important thing is that we have restored law and order.”

Local Residents in Raga did not approve of the annexation of Raga to Lol State and had written a memo to the President requesting a separate State.

A week ago, two other attacks occurred in the area of Mangayat.
