AWEIL, 24 August 2016 [Gurtong] – In Aweil West County of Lol State, the Commissioner of Gomjuer West County Mayol Maduokon Sunday that crops that were due for harvest were destroyed by the heavy rains.
The destruction was not only limited to crops and houses but also extended to livestock and free movement of people. Road transport has become impassable in the low lying areas. The Commissioner said that the affected population are now receiving humanitarian assistance.
“Yes, this is an event that happened this week, and also as you can see the people are now busy with distribution of food with the WFP because of this hunger.” He said.
“We are now trying to talk with Payam administrators to make an assessments of areas affected so that we find out their needs and then file reports to our local NGOS who can make a comprehensive supervision with them together so as report the actual figures and their humanitarian needs,” Mayol explained.
“Chel River flooded and destroyed crops in Gumjuer West County. Many people including me are affected by the disaster,” he said. Whereas in Aweil North County, some areas have been cut off due to the heavy floods.
