In 2007 San Francisco became the first city to ban plastic bags. Los Angeles will soon be the first city to outlaw paper bags in supermarkets too. Councilman Paul Koretz raised the issue that with paper bag, litter is still being generated. Therefore, if the call is approved, superstores across Los Angeles would provide reusable tote bags, in order to preserve the environment.
The environmentalists appeared to be extremely energetic about the news and hoped that the lawmakers would impose this ban statewide, and in due time, nationwide as well. Amongst the most active environmental groups is Heal the Bay. They have been campaigning for a ban on plastic bags in Los Angeles since 2007.
Kirsten James, water quality director for Heal the Bay said, “We’re thrilled! We’re hoping that more of these local policies will be a wake-up call.”
On the end of retailers, opinions are divided. Large retailers stress that rather than a city-by-city ban, a state-ban should be set as different guidelines in different cities hampers their businesses. However, The California Grocers Association showed their support for the bill stating that they were thrilled to be working with the city and support the ways in which customers are facilitated to carry their goods home.
Implementation of the ban suggested by Koretz is yet to be decided by the City Council’s Energy and Environment Committee.
