In response to the recent controversial shooting of a black teenager by a police officer in Berkeley, Missouri, almost 30 people convened to hold candlelight vigil in Martin Luther King Jr. Civic Center Park on Wednesday night. The vigil was organized and conceived by three activists who first heard about the events in Berkeley, Missouri about the death of Antonio Martin, who was shot by a police officer on Tuesday night after allegedly pointing a gun at the officer.
The incident took place only a few miles away from Ferguson, Missouri, i.e. where another unarmed black teenager Michael Brown was shot by an officer before, and has now rekindled ongoing protests over recent police killings of black men. The attendees at the vigil held a moment of silence lasting three and a half minutes, in compliance with reports that said Martin was left on the ground for three and a half hours. A recent UC Berkeley graduate, Pan Ellington, described the vigil saying that “it was just kind of an organic little gathering.”
Almost a couple weeks ago, hundreds of protesters marched through Berkeley and Oakland for several consecutive nights in order to protest against the killings. However, Ellington pointed out that the vigil was rather more of a show of solidarity and remembrance than a “big march.” She stressed that “we wanted to acknowledge the fact that obviously another young person of color was killed at the hands of a police officer.”
