The chairman of Election Commission Tan Seri Abdul Aziz Yousaf said that Malaysia has 4.8 million Chinese voters who qualify to cast their votes; however, only 3.7 million Chinese Malaysian voters have registered so far which means that about a million and above Malaysian Chinese have yet not registered their votes for the upcoming elections.

Urging the non-registered voters that it hardly takes five minutes to get their vote registered, he said “They claimed that they could not take time off to register. In fact, they were only concerned about their personal matters, and were not really interested in carrying out their duties as citizens”.

Stating facts further he expressed that Selangor has the highest number of Chinese residing who are eligible to vote however only about 70% have actually registered their vote so far. Terengganu and Perlis are two states with the least number of Chinese Malaysians and they have managed to have approximately 95% registered votes from the Chinese community.

Further speaking on the psychology of Chinese voters, he expressed “Twenty years ago, the Chinese used to vote for a particular party without looking at the candidates. Now they are also very concerned with the candidates’ performance”.

The general secretary of MCA Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha also commented on the matter. He said, “In view of the challenging current political situation in the forthcoming general election, eligible Chinese voters should register as quickly as possible to fulfill a responsibility. If a Malaysian Chinese is eligible to go to the polls but does not register as a voter, he or she will be giving the impression that the Chinese community is politically apathetic, which is not the case.”
