The Ministry of Health made an announcement Wednesday morning that they are considering raising the pay scales of healthcare professionals in the upcoming budget.

Health Minister Gan Kim Yong expressed his point of view in the parliament today saying that with the increasing number of aging people in the growing population of Singapore, it is mandatory to increase healthcare facilities for them. He further ensured that incidents of negligence and abuse at day care centers and old home however are “few and far between” but efforts should be made to make sure they come down to zero.

Ministry is expected to spend on improving the facilities at nursing homes, increasing the number of beds in public hospitals, and hiring more healthcare professionals for efficient services to the patients.

He further stressed that in order to “retain and attract high-calibre individuals,” the ministry will have come up with a revised and competitive framework for compensation of healthcare professionals within the next two years. An additional budget of $200 million will be awarded for the improvement of the program.

The proposed budget and plan for improvement will be implemented in a number of phases which will be completed by 2014. This will allow doctors and associate consultants working in hospitals to experience approximately 20% increase in their pay scale whereas consultants working in clinics will experience 10% increase. The program will also raise pay scales of dentists. However, the level of increase is yet not finalized.
