Lee Hsien Loong, the Prime Minister of Singapore, made an announcement on Friday saying that he will call for by-elections in Hougang; however, the time for calling the election has yet not been decided.

He expressed his intentions in the Parliament session today explaining that there are various factors that need to be accounted for before announcing the date and schedule for by-elections. Therefore, he needs time to think about that. Further stressing that the national agenda, welfare of the residents of Hougang, and affects of by-elections on the international forum of the country, will be the utmost significant factors determining the schedule of by-elections.

The Prime Minister announced so upon being questioned on the agenda about the seat of Hougang which has been declared vacant for a while now since the Labor Party minister decided not to contest the decision taken by his party to expel him. The former minister of Hougang Yaw Shin Leong was expelled by the LP on grounds of not clearing his image to the public upon being given the options several times regarding an affair with a married member of the party.

PM informed the parliament that the request for by-elections in Hougang has been forwarded to the court and the matter is now in the hands of the court as they have to review the case and look into several other matters.

He also politely clarified in the parliament that once a matter has been submitted to the court, the parliament has no legal grounds to discuss it anymore and the decision is to be taken by the court.
