This Wednesday, May 28th the Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and the Worker’s Party (WP) chief Low Thia Khiang got into an argument in the Parliament over issues concerning constructive politics and WP’s performance in the parliament. The fifteen minute clash began when Mr. Low stood up from his seat to rebut the Prime Minister’s speech on the President’s Address.

Mr Lee expressed that it was “striking” that the WP leader’s response to the Address had nothing on the substance of the Government’s programme, “no critiques, no suggestions, no alternatives, nothing”. Clarifying this Mr Low said that he had completely focused on the topic of constructive politics but the other WP MPs in the Parliament would talk on other subjects. Mr Low while in response to the Prime Ministers explanation of a sub-standard opposition said, “This is the mark of a responsible Opposition not to jam up the Government; allowing the Government – after giving our view, debating it – allowing the Government to move forward, not to jam up the Government. It is a mark of a responsible Government and a mark of first world Parliament.”

Mr Lee ending the argument said, “Mdm speaker. We have to call a spade a spade. If we have changed position and your previous position was wrong, say so. If you hold by your position, have your guts to reaffirm it and take the consequences. But to weasel away, play with words, avoid the issue and then claim to be responsible, that is what we fear can drive Singapore’s politics into the same place where many other countries have gone.”
