After Germany’s win in the semi-final WorldCup football match with Brazil, a Malaysian MP  Bung Mokhtar Radin tweeted his congratulations to the team while paying a tribute to Adolf Hitler. ‘Well Done..Bravo…Long Live Hitler’ was the infamous tweet which sparked outrage online but the parliamentarian couldn’t reply better than ‘whatever’, ‘get lost’ and ‘say it ir mom’.

The Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak took notice of this the other day and said that the remarks were “unacceptable and wrong.”“He does not speak for Malaysia, or for ordinary Malaysians, who understand Europe’s tragic past, and respect its modern unity,” Najib said in a statement. An opposition party called for the lawmaker to quit, and German Ambassador Holger Michael slammed the “unacceptable allusion to the fascist regime of Adolf Hitler.” The German ambassador to Malaysia, Holger Michael, also weighed in. “We strongly reject the distasteful and unacceptable allusion to the fascist regime of Adolf Hitler,” he told TIME.

Bung Mokhtar, who earlier said he was commending the German team for “fighting like” the Nazi leader had refused to apologize but issued an apology shortly after Najib’s rebuke. “When Germany whacked Brazil, I unintentionally said something that hurt” the feelings of the people in Germany, he tweeted, adding: “My sincerest apology. Long live Bung.”
