This August 9, Saturday, the Singaporeans celebrated the 49th birthday of their country and its independence. People all over the island, including young and old were seen celebrating the occasion in their own unique ways.

At a bazaar in Orchard Road, there were young tennagers celebrating by showing off their dance skills with others engaging the crowd with the games from yester years. Also on display was a show of love and peace with an exhibition of wishes penned on a record 13,300 folded doves. Meanwhile, there was a carnival at the Sports Hub with fun activities such as face-painting and ball games according to Channel News Asia. Near the Marina Bay floating platform there were live concerts at the Esplanade where the Non-Singaporeans also joined in the celebrations of the island. One of the Singaporeans had hosted and organized a special party for his friends at the Causeway. “Because I’m proud of my country and celebrations, I wanted them to experience what Singapore’s celebration is like,” he said.

Some young ones also made the day memorable by taking graduation shots by the bay. “I thought, why not take it on National Day, with the fireworks as a backdrop?” said a girl in her graduation gown. “It’ll be so wonderful, it’ll make the whole thing really special and memorable.” On the other hand, old pioneers were made to feel like celebrities with a VIP treatment. 65-year-old Azizah Mohamed Yusoff who had been a nurse for 43 years, proudly donned her badge displaying the Singapore flag. “It’s my second time at the NDP since the 90s. Things have changed tremendously since then,” she said, pointing at other pioneers taking selfies.
