The former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said that the Malays are unable to progress due to a lack of shame. He used the example of Japanese who are hardworking and have been able to rebuild their country despite their defeat in World War Two.

“One of their qualities is shame when things fail or are not done properly, but Malays are not ashamed as they can still smile when going to jail. We should be ashamed of failure, but that is not necessarily the case now, such as young men who failed their examinations and then become mat rempits (hooligans on motorcycles). Unless Malays are ashamed of failure like the Japanese, they will not succeed,” said Dr Mahathir during the launch of a book entitled “#Wahai Melayu: Allah tak akan ubah nasib Melayu, kalau kita Melayu taknak ubah diri kita sendiri”.

The foreword in this motivational book is written by Dr Mahathir whereas the book is written by businessman and author Anas Zubedy. The book is especially written for budding Malay entrepreneurs. According to the Rakyat Post, the often vocal former premier added that while Malays always prayed to God for help, they must also do something to help themselves. Dr Mahathir said that whether a race would be successful or not would depend on the values they upheld and practised. As an example, he said one could not just ask God for help without reading and expect to pass the examination. “We need diligence, hard work, determination, then we will succeed.”
