The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) recommended that a full and through audit on KLIA2 should be done by the Auditor-General. PAC chairman Datuk Nur Jazian Mohamed had asked the government to order a full audit of the construction of KLIA2 after the committee had found irregularities in the project. The irregularities also included the costs which had increased from RM1.7bil to RM4bil.

“Normally, the PAC initiates investigations based on the findings of the A-G’s Report. However, the PAC decided to scrutinise the project following many negative reports on KLIA2 on the grounds of public interest,” Nur Jazlan said this Tuesday. He also said Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), which directly funded the project, was not “customer centric” according to The Star. “They should be building airports based on what the people need to use and not to determine what people should use. This is a very glaring point in the report that should be highlighted,” he said.

In the report, the PAC found that the KLIA2 project also did not follow the original plan to replace the Low Cost Carrier Terminal. “Instead, after unexpected cost increases and upgrades, the concept of KLIA2 was changed to a hybrid airport. As a result, KLIA2 seems to be threatening the position of the existing KLIA as the main airport in Malaysia. Meanwhile, Malaysia has lost a golden opportunity to develop the most competitive low cost carrier hub in the Asia Pacific region,” the report said.
