A local Malaysian news portal this Monday informed that the Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak is experiencing a bacterial infection and is taking a break, resting at his home after his tour of districts that are hit by the Malaysia’s worst flood in decades.

Tengku Sharifuddin Tengku Ahmad, Najib’s press secretary, told AFP that the prime minister became infected with E coli after his visit to the flooded areas last month. “The prime minister is resting at home,” he said in a text message without giving more information. The Prime Minister’s office also used its official account to inform people about the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister’s Office posted on Monday that Dutak Seri Najib had received doctor’s treatment and would be taking a short break before resuming his duties. E coli is a large and diverse group of bacteria and most of it is harmless which can be treated.

Channel News Asia further informed that Rajbans Singh, president of the Malaysian Wellness Society, said that the prime minister could have been infected after consuming contaminated food or drinks. Some kinds of E coli can cause diarrhoea, he further informed. The floods in the northeast killed 21 people and a quarter million had to abandon their homes during the flooding.
