The Singapore Customs this Wednesday informed that three million contrabrand cigarettes were seized in the year 2014 which is the highest amount since 2009 and also a 3.4 percent increase from 2013’s 2.9 million.

It was also found that the number of vehicles that were found smuggling contrabrand cigarettes had also increased last year. Last year the number of vehicles was 243 which saw a 65.3 percent increase from the 147 vehicles in 2013. Channel News Asia further informed that many of the vehicles were found to have modified compartments used to hide the cigarettes, the Singapore Customs said at a press conference announcing its annual enforcement statistics.

The news portal further informed that a total of 23,862 people were caught for contraband cigarette-related offences, including 5,893 caught for smoking or possessing the cigarettes. Singapore Customs said that while the number of offenders fell from the 27,041 caught in 2013, the figures remained high, suggesting that the demand for contraband cigarettes remains high. According to Today Online the Singapore Customs said that it has observed an emerging trend of online retailers attempting to evade or under-declare the Goods and Services Tax on importation of goods into the country.
