PM Julia Gillard’s new ministry will be sworn in by Governor-General Quentin Bryce in Sydney. PM Gillard on Monday announced an expanded 22-member cabinet, promoting Bill Shorten, Mark Butler and Tanya Plibersek, while shifting Industry Minister Kim Carr to the outer ministry.
Australian PM also took the Attorney-General role from Robert McClelland but kept him in Cabinet to watch over emergency management and housing. She said her restructured cabinet will give her government an additional “firepower” in 2012.
On the other hand, Senator Carr said he did not want to let go his old job to become a Minister for Manufacturing and Defence Material. He was demoted from the Innovation, Industry, Science and Research portfolios in cabinet.
“Whilst this change of portfolio was not of my choosing, it is a job I am honoured to do,” he said.
Moreover, many believe Kim Carr’s demotion has recharged the friction between leadership rivals Ms Gillard and Kevin Rudd. Earlier, Senator Carr was believed to be Ms Gillard’s fan but is now seen as more considerate towards Mr Rudd.
Mr Rudd said Senator Rudd was “a very good minister”.
According to a number of Rudd supporters, the reshuffling has favored Gillard’s supporters but failed to eliminate poor performers of the cabinet.
