Bankstown police car kills a woman on street

A car of the Bankstown police station hit an elderly woman in south west region of Sydney on Wednesday. The woman died before medical help could arrive.

The officer in the car was responding to an emergency call from the station at 12 45pm when the police car smashed into the hatchback of an elderly woman at Meredith Street, Bankstown. The woman got severe wounds and died in a short while, even before the paramedic team could arrive. The officer driving the police car also got serious injuries on his arm and was taken to the nearby hospital in Sydney.

Witnesses reported they rushed to the accident scene when the heard the grand collision to find both the cars smashed badly into each other. The elderly woman had just taken her car out of the driveway and it collided. Due to the collision, the woman fell on the passenger seat of her car. The driver of the police car immediately reached for the woman and dragged her out of the car for help but she was already dead.

Medical help and investigators were immediately called in to analyse the situation. Parts of the Meredith Street have been blocked until all the evidence was taken. Both the cars remain on the street for initial investigation. Directions for diversion for motor vehicles towards Meredith Street have been posted to avoid traffic blockade.

  1. Why was it deemed necessary to report that the victim was “elderly”? Given the wcomment_IDespread stereotyping of older drivers as being dangerously incompetent, I suspect it is a ploy to try to shift the blame onto the “elderly” driver.
