Officials at Toyota Australia announced on Monday that they are slashing 350 jobs at their Melbourne plant under heavy supervision of security guards to ensure no trouble in the process.

Authorities have blamed the increasing price of the Australian dollar and the reduction in the volume of production at the plant as the reason for redundancy and said that the worst performing members of the team at their Melbourne plant have been dismissed. Workers feel humiliated and disappointed at the way they are being treated by the company. One of the workers who got sacked informed the media that he was given a bag by the company and asked to pack his belongings in it with five security guards on his head from where he was taken to the waiting area and made to wait for the minivan to be taken out of the plant.

One of the officers of the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union Charlie Marmara commented on the incident and said, “For me personally [it’s] very difficult, for the people themselves very upsetting, a lot of people are uncertain now what the future holds for them. They didn’t know until this morning. They came to work with their lunches, said goodbye to their wives and kids and they’ve come to work, tap on the shoulder, [brought] in here and terminated.”
