Five road workers in New South Wales have fallen sick after being exposed to a junk box of radioactive waste which is expected to be the leftovers of the working material at the time Pacific Highway was reconstructed.

The spokesperson of the Minister of Roads, Duncan Gay, informed the media about the incident and said that five road workers felt the nausea and were given medical treatment immediately. She also announced that there is nothing serious as all the workers have been declared to be “clear of any symptoms” by the exposure to the radioactive waste.

The project manager of the upgrading of Pacific Highway Bob Higgins said, “We’ve taken down the cutting there we exposed the face of the existing material [and] came across a clay material that when it’s exposed to air it gets an orange streak through it. There were a number of workers that felt a little bit of nausea and there was a bit of vomiting when they were in close proximity.”

The Environment Protection Authority of NSW has marked the area so no one enters the marked zone and is exposed to the dangerous suspected radioactive waste. Specialists from EPA are working on the location to ensure if the waste is actually the radioactive waste or it’s something else which got the road workers sick.
