Gusti Ngurah Wiratna, the governor of Kerobokan jail confirmed on Monday that the 35-year-old had been suggested for the sentence cut as part of Indonesian Independence Day celebrations on August 17. The drug smuggler Schapelle Corby was set to have another six months shaved from her sentence.
Corby had her 20-year sentence slashed by five years in May after she appealed for clemency from Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who was caught in 2004 attempting to import 4.1 kilograms of marijuana into Bali in her body board bag. If approved by the Justice and Human Rights Ministry in Jakarta, the latest cut would bring her official discharge date forward to March 2017.
The multifaceted application process included the Australian government providing an assurance that she would not breach the conditions. The only female member of the Bali Nine, Renae Lawrence has also been recommended for a sentence cut of six months. Lawrence, from Newcastle, New South Wales, was serving 20 years for her role in a failed 2005 plot to smuggle more than eight kilograms of heroin from Bali to Australia. She has already been granted more than two years in cutback.
