Ex-deputy Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is coming forward as a strong candidate for Opposition Leader in the new government. Veterans in Labor Party are of the opinion that if Albanese is nominated as a candidate for Labor’s leader in Opposition, he will have enough support to win the seat.

In case Albanese comes forward, Bill Shorten of Victoria is likely to step down in his favor. Labor Party has become more vigilant after the elections and is keen to avoid further division in the party. Albanese is known for maintaining healthy relationships with both Julia Gillard and her rival Kevin Rudd. His work as Transport and Infrastructure Minister is also highly appreciated on all levels.

Chris Bowen has shown interest in becoming a shadow treasure instead of taking a leader’s position. This leaves the seat of Opposition Leader open for only two prospective candidates – Shorten and Albanese.

“I looked at the qualities I thought I could bring to the Labor leadership. I looked at the qualities of the alternatives, I looked at the point in the electoral cycle, I looked at what I might be able to contribute in a different role, like shadow treasurer. And I decided the best fit for me was that role going forward,” Bowen told the media.

Former party Chief Simon Crean seems to be supporting Shorten for the position. He believes Shorten ‘is the person who understands the broader movement, understands business, has an engaging style (and) has been bold in the policy reform area.’
