Victoria MP Geoff Shaw is summoned to appear before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court in October after being charged on 23 counts of obtaining financial benefit by deception and one charge of misconduct in public office.

“Victoria Police has charged a 45-year-old Frankston man with 23 charges of obtain financial advantage by deception and one count of misconduct in public office. The charges relate to an investigation into allegations of misconduct in public office by a serving member of the Victorian Parliament in 2011,” Victoria Police spokeswoman Cath Allen said.

The charges against Frankston’s 45-year-old parliamentarian will definitely change the dynamics of Victorian politics. The court’s decision and proceedings will directly affect the future of Napthine government. Meanwhile, Mr Shaw claims that he will be contesting all the charges. He said he will read the charge sheet in detail and fight against it in the court.

“Last Thursday, I made submissions to the Privileges Committee which has reserved its decision. As previously stated, I have given my full co-operation to the investigations. I am entitled as a Member of Parliament to due process and will make no further comment whilst the Parliamentary Privileges Committee is still considering its decision.

“In the meantime, I restate that it is a privilege to represent the Frankston community and the Victorian Parliament and I want to assure the people of Frankston that I continue to work hard in their interests,” Mr Shaw said.

Raising questions at Mr Shaw’s credibility and criticizing the Napthine government, opposition leader Daniel Andrews called on Premier Denis Napthine to face the media today and answer questions about Mr Shaw. When the premier was approached to seek his response on the situation, he said “I have not heard so I cannot comment. I cannot comment, I have not heard anything official!”
