Just over a day after the dreadful terrorist activity that claimed 12 lives at a French satirical newspaper office in Paris, Commander of Joint Task Force Iraq, Brig-Gen. Dan Constable, provided an update on the current state of Operation IMPACT. Canada’s top military commander in Iraq provided a detailed information regarding the role and efforts of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) in battling the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

In his remarks, Brig-Gen. Dan Constable stated that “I wish to express my deepest condolences to the families and friends of those killed in (the) terrorist attack in Paris. We continue to stand firm with our allies against such terrorist acts and remain resolved alongside our international partners to positively contribute to international peace and security.” He explained that almost weeks ago, more than 8,000 Iraqi Security Force (ISF) members sought support of coalition aircrafts, including two CF-18 Hornets from Cold Lake, AB, as they conducted rescue operations to release almost 200,000 Christian and Yazidi refugees who fled to Mount Sinjar in northwestern Iraq in August to escape ISIL or ISIS.

Brig.-Gen. Constable alleged that the efforts of the coalition air strikes have facilitated Iraqi forces on the ground to fight against ISIL. He said that “because of the air strikes, ISIL is on the back foot” and “I haven’t heard of any successful counter-operations or any big pushes ISIL has been able to achieve.”
