The autopsy of Barry Raymond STEWART, 59, of Edmonton, was completed by the Medical Examiner this morning. Homicide investigators will not be releasing the cause of death at this time.

The accused, Justin Caldwill SOMERS, 25, who was charged yesterday with second-degree murder, had his first appearance in court this morning and was remanded in custody. His next court appearance is not known.

Background

Just after 5:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 12, Downtown Division members responded to the Edmonton Remand Centre at 96 Street and 104 Avenue regarding a suspicious death of a 60-year-old male inmate. (Age corrected to 59)

Early in the investigation Homicide Section was called to the scene due to the nature of the event. Investigators determined the death to be a homicide. Another inmate, Justin Caldwell Somers, 25, has been charged with second-degree murder.

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday, May 13 at 9:00 a.m. The name of the deceased will not be disclosed until next of kin have been notified.

This is Edmonton’s 20th homicide of the year.
