A 15-year-old male cyclist died after he was struck by a car in northeast Edmonton on Sunday evening.

The Edmonton Police Service responded to a call that a Ford Taurus collided with a teen riding his bicycle at 144 Avenue and 54 Street just before 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 15, 2011.

It appears that the teen was attempting to ride across 144 Avenue northbound, and had emerged between two parked cars into the path of traffic, and was struck by the car. The teen was not wearing a helmet.

The boy was transported by paramedics to hospital and succumbed to his injuries early this morning. An autopsy is scheduled for later today.

The EPS Traffic Section is investigating the collision. Speed and alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors, however, the sightlines between the vehicles may have contributed to the collision. There are no charges at this point.

This is Edmonton’s 8th traffic fatality for 2011.
