Yet another suicide of a northern Saskatchewan teenager, Ariana Robert, has highlighted once more the extent of the menace in the First Nations. Speaking from her Stanley Mission home, Ariana’s mother, Sally Ratt stated that “she was an amazing girl, she was full of life … she enjoyed the outdoors, she was really caring and considerate.” Ariana committed suicide life earlier this month at the naïve age of just 12.

According to Ratt, it’s the hardest thing she’s ever gone through her entire life because of “her not being here and not knowing why.” A total of four youth have committed suicide this month in Stanley Mission, La Ronge and Deschambault Lake. Earlier on Tuesday, a 10-year-old girl in Deschambault Lake reportedly took her own life as well. Ariana’s family has stressed that suicide has been a problem here in Stanley Mission and across northern Saskatchewan for years and so they urge the officials to take action.

Meanwhile, Ottawa has also announced to take notice of the incidents. In a statement issued by Federal Health Minister Jane Philpott, it was mentioned that “in Saskatchewan, there are multiple communities that has been affected by the recent suicides and we are making sure that mental health workers and other mental healthcare professionals are in those communities.” Northern Saskatchewan leaders say they plan on setting up an operational centre in La Ronge to co-ordinate the response effort.
