Canada Immigration Department Says ‘No Current Plans’ to Increase Staff

A spokesperson for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has confirmed that the department has no plans of increasing the staffing levels in wake of the U.S. election results. Earlier, a report had claimed that several sources indicated “high level meetings took place this week” with immigration officials as they planned to reportedly “accelerate” a plan to cope with a possible spike in Mexican migrants, given Donald Trump was elected south of the border.

In an emailed response to Global News on Friday, Immigration department spokesperson, Sonia Lesage, clarified that “there are no current plans to modify staffing levels.” According to Lesage, the immigration levels plans are established by the number of immigrants expected to be admitted to Canada within each year and the last plan predicts between 280,000 and 320,000 new permanent residents will immigrate to the country in 2017 in total. The next step for permanent residents is Canadian citizenship.

Whereas on the other hand, an executive with the Calgary Mexican Canadian Cultural Society, Carlos Rios, also confirmed that they don’t foresee a huge influx in applications to the country. “I don’t really see that being the case in Canada.” In his remarks, Carlos alleged that “too far away, too cold…too cold–that’s the main thing.” During his campaign, present-elect Donald Trump had promised to build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico because “when Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best,” and “they’re sending people who have lots of problems and they’re bringing their problems with us.  They’re bringing drugs, they’re bringing crime, they’re rapists, and some, I assume, are good people.”
