September 13 marks the day of grief and sorrow for the students and teachers of Dawson College. In 2006, Kimveer Gill went to the Montreal school with a gun. Gill shot 18 years old Anastasia De Sousa and injured 16 people prior to killing himself.

After five years, the Montreal campus will remember the heartbreak by inaugurating a peace garden. The peace garden is a tribute to Anastasia De Sousa and the audacity of those victimized by the tragedy.

Moreover, by the end of September, Dawson will announce an international conference with the Association of Canadian Community Colleges that will look at aspects that could add to vicious actions and the potential for educationalists to help control it. The conference will focus at developing empathy among youth, cyber bullying, transforming violent school cultures and managing campus safety.

Mary Hlywa, president of the social service department at Dawson said: “We want to move the discussion forward from simply a memory of the tragedy that happened to what do we do about it… Now when it happens it’s not the same kind of shock value that it had previously. Well, how appropriate is that?”
