This Tuesday was an eye-opener for Democrats—NDP learned the meaning of Conservative majority. Conservative MPs used their power on the Commons access to information; privacy and ethics committee to being with the fall parliamentary session by studying the alleged Elections Canada overstepped by the official Opposition.

Democrats negated any misconduct and decided to have the ethics commissioner appear before the committee Thursday to confront Tory claims that NDP wrongfully used contributions from large labour unions to back its spring convention in Vancouver.

Reportedly, the chief electoral officer will be asked to appear next week on the same matter.

Conservative MP Dean Del Mastro said: “This should take the precedence of this committee.”

According to NDP MP Charlie Angus, the Conservatives were on “another crusade” and were mocking the committee. He said, “They are not interested in the larger work of this committee.”

Elections Canada indicted four Conservatives this spring with violations under the Elections Act related to the 2006 federal election.
