Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, has faced harsh criticism for his statement over the death of former Cuban president Fidel Castro, as he expressed “deep sorrow” by diplomatically praising the controversial Cuban leader. Mr. Trudeau recently returned from a diplomatic visit to Cuba and made the statement early on Saturday after it was announcement that Castro had died at the age of 90.
In his controversial statement, PM Trudeau alleged that the late Cuban president was a “controversial figure” but remembered him as a “larger-than-life leader.” Trudeau highlighted that Castro made significant improvements to Cuba’s education and health-care systems by mentioning that “a legendary revolutionary and orator, Mr. Castro made significant improvements to the education and health care of his island nation.” Moreover, Trudeau added that “I know my father was very proud to call him a friend.” Mr. Trudeau’s statement was not received well by some in Canada — and around the world – who remained less generous in their description of the deceased. In fact, some even condemned the prime minister’s statement and drew attention to the various human rights violations during Castro’s half-century regime.
The Cuban-American senator for Florida, Marco Rubio, commented on PM Trudeau’s statement in a Twitter post that “is this a real statement or a parody? Because if this is a real statement from the PM of Canada it is shameful (and) embarrassing.” Whereas, conservative leadership hopeful Lisa Raitt wrote in an open letter to Trudeau that he “dismissed Castro’s crimes as simply ‘controversial.’”
