British Columbia’s MP Nathan Cullen jumped into the leadership race, Friday. However, the 39-year-old who represents Skeena-Bulkley Valley has much to do before dreaming of competing with front-runner Brian Topp. The ex- party president was backed Friday by chief member of the NDP caucus a little while before Mr Cullen declared his own candidacy.

In Vancouver, Mr Cullen declared that the aim of the NDP should not be to overpower Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper for the sheer sake of a win. He said it should instead be “to beat him with purpose and vision,” he said, “send his kind of politics to the dustbin of history where it belongs, and get a progressive government that this country’s progressive majority deserves.”

Before his announcement, Libby Davies said she considers Mr Topp, who has the backing of several of those who were close to late Jack Layton, is the right man for the job.

She said: “I feel very comfortable that Brian Topp understands the work that Jack has been doing. He’s been a key part of our team. He’s got great leadership qualities. He has very progressive values. He has experience across the country.”
