Friends and colleagues of 63-year-old MLA Roger Parent expressed grief at the Saskatchewan Legislature on his death, only a few hours after he publicly revealed of being diagnosed with cancer. All those gathered at the legislature described him as a relentless, down to earth politician who was honored to serve the people.

In his remarks, Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall mentioned that “the moment you said this might be hard to do would be the moment he would double down and get it done.” He added that Parent was a friend and the impact of his death was “sudden and profound.” He alleged that “we are just feeling very much for (his wife) Sheila and his family.” The flags was raised at half-mast and the question period was cancelled after a unanimous vote by MLAs.

Those who knew him, remembered Parent as a hard-working politician who was immensely proud to serve as an MLA and never had lofty aspirations beyond serving his constituents. A volunteer from Parent’s 2016 campaign, Alexander Shalashniy, recalled that “he was always amazingly chipper and was an absolute gem of a human to constituents and volunteers.” According to Shalashniy, Parent would always go above and beyond, thanking each of his volunteers. Shalashniy added that “he made a point of sending personal thank yous every time people helped out and always had amazing food prepared for the people going door to door in the cold.”
