Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has issued a new statement to defend the Liberal Party’s cash-for-access fundraisers being held in the homes of wealthy Canadians as he told the Parliament that he goes to these events to talk up his plan to tax the rich and help the struggling middle class.

Soon after acknowledging that people lobby him at the $1,500-per-ticket receptions, Mr. Trudeau faced harsh criticism in the House of Commons on Tuesday and demands to stop the practice. The interim Conservative leader Rona Ambrose told the Prime Minister that “on the day that he was sworn in, he said that he was committed to the highest ethical standards and now that has become a joke.” She questioned that “what happened? When did money become more important than the integrity of his office?”

In his remarks, Mr. Trudeau stated that “no matter where I am or who I am talking to I always talk about the same thing: The fact that our priorities are to create economic growth for the middle class by increasing taxes for the 1 per cent of the wealthiest so we are able to reduce them for the middle class.” He stressed that “we point out that we stopped sending out child benefits to wealthy families so we can do more for the families who need it.” Mr. Trudeau pointed out that “the Trudeau Foundation is an independent foundation established in the memory of my father with which I ceased to have any engagement shortly after having become leader of the Liberal Party.”
