The Chatham-Kent Police Service released an interesting list of ‘Silly Calls of 2016’ on Tuesday. This year’s calls included those seeking police assistance in settling a dispute over the ownership of a jar of peanut butter to those who made a Facebook plea after a spouse passed gas.

In a written statement issued on Tuesday, Public Information Officer Renee Cowell mentioned that “this list clearly demonstrates that when people don’t know who to call they call the police – we are asked to wear many hats during a shift, like landlord, referee, 411 operator, just to name a few.” She explained that “we deal with serious calls on a daily basis, this list shows that on occasion some calls are not – which gives people an inside look at the light hearted side of policing.” Cowell alleged that “we will continue to educate citizens on the importance of calling of 911 and more specifically what instances should be considered an emergency,” adding that “there are times when our non-emergency number should be used instead.”

In addition to the list of ‘Silly Calls of 2016’, Chatham-Kent also released a list of the “best speeding excuses of 2016.” The list detailed actual quotes that CKPS officers have received from drivers who were stopped for speeding. It ranged from excuses like “I have something wrong with my battery and I was trying to charge it fast” to “I just washed my truck and I was trying to dry it off.”
