The two Toronto sisters detained in Nigeria due to a sex scandal, Jyoti Matharoo and Kiran Matharoo, posted an unusual video apology posted on Thursday. The 45-second video published on YouTube shows Jyoti Matharoo saying that “we apologize to Femi Otedola and his family, especially his wife and children, and all the other petitioners,” while her sister Kiran Matharoo stands beside her.

Nigerian media reports claim the sisters were charged last week due to allegations of cyberbullying and attempting to blackmail wealthy Nigerian men with photos of sex acts. According to the Police in Nigeria, the sisters targeted a billionaire oil tycoon, Otedola, and these allegations made headlines in Nigeria and Canada.

The video posted on Thursday was published by an account called Linda Ikeji TV. Speaking to the camera, Jyoti read from a phone and said that “we created a platform called Naijagistlive.com and .co where people can send in stories.” Jyoti added that “most stories were sent by close friends or associates of people being written about. The intention was not to hurt anyone or to be malicious. The intention was not to extort anyone. We haven’t received any money from this website.” She reiterated that “we are again very sorry and we assure all the petitioners that we will not have any affiliation whatsoever with this website or any other website that has to do with this.”
