On Wednesday, Treasury Board president Tony Clement made an attempt to end the debate on the $50-million G8 legacy fund by appearing before a parliamentary committee with an aim to face the opposition.
Nonetheless, Clement failed to give detailed insight on the matter and did nothing to suppress opposition’s assertions that the money was little more than a political slush fund for Clement to dole out as he saw fit around his Parry Sound-Muskoka riding.
He said: “I believe that my record is a good record, it’s an untainted record. It’s a record of probity and honesty. I try to do my job the best I can for the people who’ve not only elected me but for the people of Canada and I will continue to do so in my new role as president of the Treasury Board.”
MP Charlie Angus said Clement’s handling of the legacy fund clearly shows that he is not capable of administering the federal treasury.
“You got your hands on $50 million of border infrastructure money. You blew it on projects like hockey arenas and summit centres, you told your mayors to keep their lines straight, let’s not talk to the media until we get the story out,” Angus said.
“Mr. Clement, simple question: Why should Canadians trust you with the $250 billion that you’re now in charge of?”
