Murder trial of a Montreal couple and their son was unexpectedly delayed Thursday morning when the 58-year-old suspect, Mohammad Shafia was rushed to hospital due to a serious medical condition.

Kingston police Staff Sgt. Chris Scott said alleged killer Shafia was hospitalized late Wednesday. Apparently, Shafia was unwell at the detention centre in Napanee, Ont., where the accused and his 41-year-old wife, Tooba Mohammad Yahya and 20-year-old son Hamed are jailed.

Respecting the confidentiality ongoing trial, Scott refused to give any more details on the case and suspect’s medical condition.

He said: “It’s strictly a medical issue, no injuries from any assault or any third-party intervention. I have no information it was a suicide attempt. [The problem] needs to be looked after immediately.”

Moreover, Scott also said that Shafia was initially transferred to a small medical care in Napanee but later shifted to Kingston General Hospital.

Teenage sisters Zainab Shafia, Sahar Shafia, and Geet Shafia, and Shafia’s first wife Rona Amir Mohammad were found dead in a waterlogged Nissan Sentra at the bottom of a shallow canal in Kingston on June 30, 2009.

Ontario Superior Court Justice Robert Maranger said: “It was a medical emergency, a fairly serious one. We’re going to adjourn (the trial) until Tuesday for the lawyers to sort of get the feedback on the status of the medical situation. Our hope is that we get back as soon as possible. I can’t say exactly how long the delay is going to be.”
