Hamilton police charge Scott Patrick Keels for 2006 murder of James Surette

Police are asking for information from the public to help solve a year old homicide.

On Monday June 5th 2006, 47 year old James Surette died of stab wounds to the upper body. He was found at approximately 10p.m. lying on the sidewalk on Ferguson St. in the area of Cannon St.

While Mr. Surette lived in the downtown Hamilton area, it is unknown why he was in the area where his body was found. Shortly before the homicide, Mr. Surette and another unidentified male were seen walking across a car dealership lot on Cannon St. Police are seeking the male’s identity.

A knife that was found in a field north of where the body was found has been identified as the murder weapon. The knife has a black handle and approximate 5 inch blade.

Update………..November 4th, 2011

The Hamilton Police Service Homicide Unit has charged a 34 yr. old man with the 2006 homicide of James Surette. Charged with 2nd degree murder is Scott Patrick Keels of no fixed address.

On Thursday, November 3rd, 2011, the Hamilton Police Service Homicide Unit was contacted by Toronto Police after they arrested Keels at his Toronto residence. Keels will appear in court later today.
