Police has confirmed to have taken one suspect in custody after several key buildings in a small community on Newfoundland’s south coast, Milltown-Head of Bay d’Espoir, caught fire including the local school, town hall and police station. According to RCMP Cpl. Trevor O’Keefe, they were first informed about the incident at about 4:40 a.m. local time on Tuesday.

It was explained that the first calls reported only the town hall on fire but a short time later, callers reported that the local school and RCMP station were engulfed in flames. O’Keefe elucidated that “I’m not sure of the damages, but from what I can see the school is bad,” adding that “it looks deliberate.” Furthermore, O’Keefe shared that preliminary findings have suggested that the fires might have been set deliberately and so the police have one suspect in custody. However, he refrained from sharing any further information about the investigation or the suspect.

Deputy Mayor Clarence Kelly mentioned that people in the community are in shock, adding that the school appeared to be destroyed. One of the residents at a hilltop overlooking the bay, Melita Kearley, shared to have gotten up at around 5:30 a.m. and seen flames and thick smoke blanketing the area below after she went to her window. She recalled that “I got up and looked out and everything was all ablaze.” She remarked that “oh my God, the smoke was just going in over the hill and the school looked like it was completely burning to the ground.”
