With the victorious end in Libya, a Canadian general was welcomed home with a ceremony Thursday, as an appreciation for commanding NATO forces in Libya.

Canadian government along with the Forces arranged Lt.-Gen. Charles Bouchard’s welcome at the regal Senate chamber in the Parliament Buildings. Bouchard was overjoyed when he was honored for his Meritorious Service Cross one month after Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi was killed by the rebellions.

“As commander of Operation Unified Protector I had the privilege of leading an exceptional international team,” Bouchard told the audience Thursday. “I can report to you that the members of the Canadian Forces performed their duty with gallantry, with courage and with pride.”

“It’s an honour and a privilege,” he added. “Also, as I told someone, never turn down what’s offered to you because you don’t know what it will bring to you.”

Over 2,000 members of the military were engrossed in the mission, including war armaments. Canada flew 10 per cent of all fighter jet raids, over 1,000 in all.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper said: “Because they held the ring, the Libyan people were able to lift Gadhafi’s yoke from their necks. Thanks to their own sacrifices, Libyans have won the opportunity to design for themselves a better future.”
