Stephen Harper and Barack Obama are planning to sit together at the White House in Washington on Wednesday in order to announce the details of an overhyped border security deal. Ten months ago, the two leaders marked the beginning of “Beyond-the-Border” talks to reach a new agreement on border security.
The U.S. has proposed a “Buy America” jobs bill that would not allow Canadian firms to bid on U.S. contracts anymore. This bill was condemned by Canada’s federal government for being trade protectionist.
“To preserve and extend the benefits our close relationship has helped bring to Canadians and Americans alike, we intend to pursue a perimeter approach to security, working together within, at, and away from the borders of our two countries to enhance our security and accelerate the legitimate flow of people, goods, and services between our two countries,” said the leaders.
“We intend to address security threats at the earliest point possible in a manner that respects privacy, civil liberties, and human rights.”
Moreover, U.S. has deferred a resolution on the Keystone XL pipeline from Alberta to the U.S. Gulf Coast, waiting for Canadian government to announce the high significance of the project in order to create employment opportunities in both countries.
