The Calgary Police Service has charged a man in relation to a sexual assault that was reported yesterday, and they continue to investigate another incident.
At approximately 4:15 a.m., on Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011, security personnel in the area of 8 Avenue and 1 Street S.W. were approached by a woman who said she had been sexually assaulted.
It is believed a man approached the woman outside a restaurant in the 200 block of 8 Avenue S.W. They then walked to a back alley in the area, where the woman was sexually assaulted. She then was able to flee the area, running onto 8 Avenue where she sought help from security personnel from an area business, who called 911.
Police and EMS responded, and the woman was transported to a local hospital, where she was treated for her injuries.
Police then received a report of a similar incident that happened shortly after the first assault. A woman was convinced to go into a back alley by a man, who then grabbed the victim, pushed her to the ground and attempted to sexually assault her. The woman was able to free herself and run from the area. Investigators have spoken to this victim.
A short time after these incidents were reported, District 1 officers arrested a man matching the suspect description, in the 200 block of 8 Avenue S.W.
Charges have been laid in relation to the sexual assault and officers continue to investigate the attempted sexual assault.
Wilguens Sylvain, 27, of Calgary, has been charged with one count each of sexual assault and forcible conferment.
Sylvain remains in custody. His next court appearance is Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011, at 9 a.m.
